Prity Kundan

Prity came to us on 27th August 2009. She had been found abandoned on the pavement at Kalighat temple, Kolkata, and we were asked to look after her. She was around nine years old and extremely weak. Nothing is known about her parents, as she gets upset when we mention them and doesn’t like to talk about it. Unlike some of the others at shuktara who took a bit longer to feel comfortable in their new surroundings, she adjusted quickly and with little fear.

Prity has cerebral palsy and cannot walk. She goes to school full-time at REACH, and has also been going once a month to the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy where there is more focus on mobility issues due to her CP.

Recently (June 2016) Prity was fitted with knee gaiters and AFO (ankle-foot orthoses) at Mobility India. She can now stand at a table or window by herself. These devices will help her mobility and may even make her legs strong enough for her to be able to walk unassisted.

As her date of birth isn’t known Prity chose her birthday, opting for 20th November because this is the time of the Kali Puja festival. She is a very confident and clever girl, and knows exactly what she wants and how to get it! She enjoys school and her favourite subject is maths. She also likes to spend time sewing.
