shuktara home for young adults with disabilities - 2017 February - watching Butoh on the roof

Butoh performance on the shuktara roof

Bridget Scott has been to Kolkata before, but this is the first time she has danced for shuktara.

Bridget is from London and lives in Kyoto, Japan where she has been studying two Japanese dance forms: the avant garde style of Butoh and a very traditional form known as Nihon Buyoh.

On Friday evening 24th February 2017 Bridget came to shuktara boys home and performed a selection of Buyoh and Butoh for the young people from both of our homes on our rooftop.

The staff had decorated the roof with saris and placed beautiful textiles on the floor for everyone to sit on.

Bridget started with Buyoh and then did Butoh and some improvisation where she removed her obi (the tie around her waist) and ran around and in between the young people and staff of shuktara allowing them to hold and touch the obi as she ran.

It was an exciting, emotional and interactive performance and deeply moving as well because it was the night of Maha Shivaratri here in India.

We thank Maura Hurley for introducing Bridget to us and special thanks to Bridget who had a heartfelt wish to perform for our young people. We appreciated it. THANK YOU!

Choice Support blogs about shuktara

We had a visitors at Lula Bari recently, Steven Rose and his partner Tracy.

Steven is the CEO of Choice Support, an organisation that provides support to people with learning disabilities in England. He has worked in the field of disability for over 40 years and he and his organisation have been supporting Guria at Lula Bari for the last eight months or so.

On returning to the UK Steven wrote about his visit to shuktara. This is what he says:

Returning to the work of Shuktara, in more than 40 years of working with disabled people I have never been so impressed with the levels of dedication and commitment I witnessed. Shuktara manage to achieve so much with so little and are literally saving children’s lives.

Choice Support visits shuktara

Choice Support is a leading social care charity providing services to people with a wide range of support needs throughout much of England. Last week Steven Rose, Chief Executive of Choice Support, and his partner Tracy visited shuktara.

Choice Support has been giving support to shuktara since the beginning of 2016. They were moved by the story of Guria, who was found abandoned on the street but seems to have found the secret to happiness as she is always smiling brightly. This was a wonderful chance for Steven and Tracy to meet Guria and see what her life is like now.

They brought nail varnish and flower headbands for all of the girls which was a good way to get to know the girls. The girls were delighted to have their nails done and wear the headbands, as you can see in the photos.

Thank you Choice Support!

shuktara home for girls with disability - 2016 August - Muniya's drawing of the Indian flag

Independence Day

Independence Day, celebrated on August 15th, is always a cause for celebration at shuktara. The Indian flag is raised on the roof of both the boys and the girls homes.

Saluting the flag is not only a serious occasion for the girls at Lula Bari - it's also a time for some fun. Here are some photos of Muniya and Tamina enjoying their Independence Day celebration.
