shuktara - 2016-03-30 - David and Ashok

David and Ashok

When David Earp, who founded shuktara, visited New York in 2009 at the invitation of Christina Kim from dosa he met the photographer Mary Ellen Mark who asked him numerous questions particularly about Ashok and how he would survive in the India that she knew and loved.

Now Ashok is working full time at Shuktara Cakes and here he is with David in front of a poster from dosa celebrating Mary Ellen's life.

Assessment for Guria and Prity to go to school

On 14th March, Pappu attended the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy to organise an assessment for Guria and Prity who live at Lula Bari.

Prity is already in full time education but will benefit from a more serious study routine and Guria is just really excited about going to school!

On 17th March the girls both went for their assessments and as there are currently no full time spaces available for their admission they will go there for one day every month until permanent spaces open up for them.

shutara - Tamina on Holi

Happy Holi from Lula Bari!

Holi is really a holiday everyone can celebrate - here are some of the girls and young women of Lula Bari to show you just how much fun this festival of colours can be! Notice that no one escapes being smeared with colours - not even Pappu or David.

Colours of Holi

Happy Holi!

According to Wikipedia:
"Holi (ΰ€Ήΰ₯‹ΰ€²ΰ₯€) is a colourful and happy Hindu holiday celebrated primarily in India on the last full moon of the lunar month of Phalguna at the end of the winter season. It falls in either late February or early March. It is also known as the Festival of Colours."

At shuktara Holi has a long history - every year everyone at shuktara throws coloured powder and liquid colour in bright, vibrant hues at each other, the staff and friends who come by. For days afterward the colour is still visible on faces, hands, and clothes as it slowly fades. Holi is a wonderful holiday, one that everyone participates in and completely enjoys.

shuktara - Sanjay, Sumi & Munni 2016

Sanjay’s family

Sanjay came to shuktara in 2000 - cheeky, smart and smiley. He always wanted to have his own family and now his dream has come true.

In February 2015 he married a lovely deaf girl called Munni and on 6th December she gave birth to Sumi.
Sanjay's job at Shuktara Cakes means he has enough money to rent his own home and live independently.

He has managed all this on his own, and no doubt the stability and support from living at shuktara helped him have the confidence to bring his dream to fruition. We believe that Sanjay probably had the skills he needed to be a wonderful, loving father and husband all along.
