Bappa and Sumon were pushed in the wheelchair race and both received prizes.

Excited about school!

Going to school is something that everyone at shuktara looks forward to. When someone new comes to shuktara we wait until they decide they are ready for this new experience.

Bappa arrived at Anna Bari the end of January. By the end of March he was ready to go to REACH for his assessment and started school in April. We think you’ll agree that Bappa seems especially excited about school.

Bappa goes to REACH

Bappa settled in so quickly to his life at shuktara that Pappu decided to take him to REACH school for assessment.

Yesterday (28th March) at REACH he seemed to have a marvelous time being assessed – just look at the photos. Pappu said he did very well and will start classes on Monday 1st April in the Cerebral Palsy Unit.

We look forward to hearing how Bappa does in school but we expect mainly glowing reports as we are sure his teachers will be completely won over by his amazing smile.

Aakash assessment at REACH

Over the years most of our young people have attended REACH school. Pappu took Aakash to REACH for his assessment and as you can see from the photo below in the car he could hardly contain his excitement. He completely won them over not only with his ability to put vegetable pieces in the right place but also with his winning smile.

Aakash starts school next week - for the first time ever! We couldn't be more proud of him.

Filming at REACH school

Last week the Shuktara Documentary Film crew spent some time filming at REACH school where the girls from Lula Bari go. Phoebe Brown and Raegan Hodge were invited to film Guria and Prity in their physiotherapy sessions at REACH and were able to get some great shots of their day in school.

We thank Phoebe and Raegan for coming and look forward when they return to Kolkata to film more of shuktara.

Muniya performs in a school program

All of the girls at Lula Bari attend REACH school in their different units. Recently they had a program and Muniya was in full costume and make-up and loving it, as all our girls do.

Thank you to Ranjini Mukherjee for sending us photos and all the other teachers and helpers there for looking after our girls.

Puja and Guria go to school for the first time

Last week Pappu was really busy with paperwork for admission to REACH school for Puja and Guria. He had taken photos of Guria and Puja and had written deep descriptions of their needs and abilities. We were expecting them to get admission after the Summer holiday in June.

Sometimes things happen fast in India - Pappu was able to get both girls enrolled immediately and they started on Monday (3 April 2017).

Of course Guria is loving it because she is completely delighted with each new experience. Puja is feeling more and more settled and she loves going out to school every day.

The girls' interaction with other people is of primary importance. In school they are learning to be in different situations and coping with different experiences outside of their home. This is just one of the ways they will become part of their community.

shuktara - Moni at Nikko Park

A day at Nicco Park

On the 22nd January 2016 the girls from Lula Bari who attend REACH school in Golf Green here in Kolkata had a picnic at Nicco Park with their friends, school mates, teachers and attendants.

The photos of Lali, Prity and Moni were taken by Ranjini Mukherjee who is a teacher at REACH and a longtime friend of all of us at shuktara.

Moni came to us in September 2014 after being abandoned by her family. She was very distressed for a long time, but is now settling and is enrolled in school.
Arvind, the driver, takes Moni and the other girls to REACH in our vehicle and they, of course, demand that the music is played loud.
You can see how happy Moni is in these photos and you can follow her story here:
