Lula Bari home for girls with disability

Wheels on fire #2 – mobility at Lula Bari

We just can't stop telling you about the amazing generosity of Sanjib Shaw and his friends. Our last post was about the boys getting wheelchairs and this one celebrates a new form of mobility for Prity and Guria.

Everyone at shuktara is just so excited about going on vacation with Sanjib and the gift of six wheelchairs will enable those less mobile shuktara young people to move around much more easily.

Thank you again Sanjib!

Wheels on fire!

We often think of Sanjib Shaw as one of shuktara's angels.

Sanjib decided to take everyone from shuktara on holiday however for a few of our less mobile young people this is not easy. Not one to let a small issue like limited mobility stop him Sanjib and a group of his friends decided to donate six new wheelchairs to shuktara.

We are overwhelmed by their generosity and wish to thank Sanjib and his wonderful group of friends. We know that everyone will be able to enjoy their holiday and promise to post photos soon!

New physiotherapist at shuktara

We now have a local physiotherapist who is coming to Lula Bari and the shuktara boys' house. He may increase his timing but for now he is starting slowly with one hour in each home twice a week. After only a couple of sessions the results were obvious.

We are very grateful to two wonderful shuktara supporters who are sponsoring his stipend for one year.

We expect regular physio sessions will make a difference in both comfort and mobility for Moni, Prity, Guria, Aakash, Subhash, Suman and Ratan.

And it's great fun, especially with the exercise balls!

Suellen Dainty visits Lula Bari

We had a visit last week from Suellen Dainty who is an author and was in Kolkata researching for a new book! Suellen was a friend of Lula Gibson; the girls' home Lula Bari is named in her memory.

This is a photo from her visit to Lula Bari, sitting with Lali (left) and Guria (right). We're so pleased she came to see shuktara and hope she enjoyed her time with us as much as we enjoyed having her!

Studying at Lula Bari

We have a lot of fun at shuktara but we can also be serious.

None of the young people at our homes have ever been forced to go to school. We believe in letting them settle at home before enrolling them at school.

In India, home tuitions are an integral part of education. Below are some photos of Moni and Muniya studying at Lula Bari. Don't let their smiles fool you - they are intently doing their lessons!

Filming at REACH school

Last week the Shuktara Documentary Film crew spent some time filming at REACH school where the girls from Lula Bari go. Phoebe Brown and Raegan Hodge were invited to film Guria and Prity in their physiotherapy sessions at REACH and were able to get some great shots of their day in school.

We thank Phoebe and Raegan for coming and look forward when they return to Kolkata to film more of shuktara.

shuktara homes for young people with disabilities - Aakash

Aakash has a new home at shuktara

Wednesday, 28th March, was an exciting day for shuktara because a new boy arrived. His name is Aakash, which means "sky". Since he was a baby Aakash has lived in a nursing home, surrounded by staff who have clearly given him lots of attention and love. You can see in the photos below how emotional it was for the women who had cared for Aakash all his life to say goodbye.

Unfortunately the nursing home is closing and although Aakash has been loved, he has not really been around young people his own age. As Phoebe Brown (who is currently filming a documentary about shuktara) says - "It is time for Aakash to be in a real home."

We welcome Aakash to his new home at shuktara!
