shuktata home for girls with disabilities - 2017 April - Puja in her school uniform - maybe for the first time ever

Puja and Guria go to school for the first time

Last week Pappu was really busy with paperwork for admission to REACH school for Puja and Guria. He had taken photos of Guria and Puja and had written deep descriptions of their needs and abilities. We were expecting them to get admission after the Summer holiday in June.

Sometimes things happen fast in India - Pappu was able to get both girls enrolled immediately and they started on Monday (3 April 2017).

Of course Guria is loving it because she is completely delighted with each new experience. Puja is feeling more and more settled and she loves going out to school every day.

The girls' interaction with other people is of primary importance. In school they are learning to be in different situations and coping with different experiences outside of their home. This is just one of the ways they will become part of their community.

Emma and Simon at the boys home

Our friends Emma and Simon who visited Lula Bari last week, also spent an afternoon at our boys home. Emma was here on the day that Ratan came, so for her it was very emotional to see him again. The moment he was brought into the house in 2012 was a particularly poignant memory for her.

Emma brought her partner Simon with her this time and it's always interesting to see our homes and young people through someone else's eyes.

In Simon's stunning photos below you can see that he has a great eye and it's no coincidence that his name on Instagram is @polyperspective.

Subhash could not be happier than he is now and Simon captured him last week with rays of afternoon sunlight surrounding him.

Simon captures the spirit of Sunil with perfect evening light shining on him.

Emma and Simon’s visit to Lula Bari

Our friend Emma Christmas has visited us at shuktara a couple of times. On both her visits she has made sure that her priority is to spend time with the girls. On Wednesday 22nd March she came with Simon her partner.

They brought lots of things from London and had a great afternoon on this short stopover visit. Emma did a makeup session with the girls. They also brought balloons and cut and paste people to play with. It was a wonderful afternoon and we were all happy to see Emma again. The girls especially love her.

Sunil’s latest obsession

The ever inventive Sunil Das has a new obsession.

Using scraps of found fabric he twists, binds and fastens until he has something that looks like a small figure.

It's almost like Sunil is doing an art installation in our locality. After making the dolls he's been placing them around the house and our neighborhood.

This one he positioned on the wall of the house opposite! Each of the dolls is different and we look forward to each new creation.

shuktara home for girls with disabilities - 2017 March - Moni sitting

Moni does not feature often in our photos from Lula Bari girls home. She is sometimes very shy, emotional or unconfident about her looks.

I think she is beautiful and am happy to know she is safe and loved and cared for at @shuktara_homes #kolkata#myshuktara #LulaBari

gremkoska Beautiful sweet girl. Reminds me of the Roald Dahl quote: A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely. Xx

Why Levi is is walking to support Guria:

Because this little girl called Guria is disabled and I want to help her have a home because she lived on the streets.
