Colours of Holi

Happy Holi!

According to Wikipedia:
"Holi (होली) is a colourful and happy Hindu holiday celebrated primarily in India on the last full moon of the lunar month of Phalguna at the end of the winter season. It falls in either late February or early March. It is also known as the Festival of Colours."

At shuktara Holi has a long history - every year everyone at shuktara throws coloured powder and liquid colour in bright, vibrant hues at each other, the staff and friends who come by. For days afterward the colour is still visible on faces, hands, and clothes as it slowly fades. Holi is a wonderful holiday, one that everyone participates in and completely enjoys.

shuktara - Sanjay, Sumi & Munni 2016

Sanjay’s family

Sanjay came to shuktara in 2000 - cheeky, smart and smiley. He always wanted to have his own family and now his dream has come true.

In February 2015 he married a lovely deaf girl called Munni and on 6th December she gave birth to Sumi.
Sanjay's job at Shuktara Cakes means he has enough money to rent his own home and live independently.

He has managed all this on his own, and no doubt the stability and support from living at shuktara helped him have the confidence to bring his dream to fruition. We believe that Sanjay probably had the skills he needed to be a wonderful, loving father and husband all along.

Watching a miracle at shuktara

On Thursday evening, January 21st 2016, CHILDLINE called Pappu Mishra, the Chairman of shuktara, to say there was a girl in need of a home. He went to visit her and organised immediately to take her to Lula Bari, our girls home.

She arrived with documents describing her as "Unknown". The first few days she was understandably overwhelmed by her new surroundings. The girls and staff have really made her feel at home and just a few days after her arrival it happened - she smiled!

Now she has a home at shuktara, and a name - Puja Bagh. (Click here to read more...)

Tamina at Lula Bari, the girls’ home

14th January 2016
Today, Tamina didn't go to school - not a huge problem because two tutors come every day to work with the girls at Lula Bari.

Nandita di comes during the day and does needlework (see some examples we have put on the wall behind Tamina), yoga and exercise. Then in the evening Priyanka comes to help with homework and often stays over and spends the night there.

Since Tamina is full of energy it's good for her to have activities to keep her interested and busy.
