New clothes at Lula Bari

Maura Hurley is a longtime friend of shuktara who runs Mustard Seeds, a wonderful Kolkata organisation dedicated to art, the environment and education. Every year they undertake a local used clothing drive and distribute the clothes to local organisations. This year shuktara was one of the fortunate beneficiaries!

Everyone loves new clothes and as you can see in the photos, our girls had a great time trying on and modelling their gifts. Thank you Maura Hurley for the fabulous new-to-us clothes, just in time for Pujas!

Gifts from London

Jewellrey gifts from friends in London arrived just in time for the beginning of the Puja season here in Kolkata. This season is similar to Christmas - everyone looks forward to getting new clothes and gifts.

As you can see the recipients of these wonderful gifts were thrilled to receive them.

Special thanks to Patricia Brady for thinking of shuktara and to Cecile Tiano for the wonderful jewellery and for your generosity in passing it along.

Happy birthday Moni!

Although most actual birth dates of the young people at shuktara are unknown we think that birthdays are an important part of someone's identity. At some point after each new person arrives at shuktara they choose their own birthday. These birthdays are remembered and celebrated.

Moni's birthday was 11th September and a celebration complete with birthday cake was held at Lula Bari.

Looks like the girls dressed up in their best frocks for Moni's birthday - maybe because of that beautiful chocolate cake!

Emily’s last day at shuktara

Emily Howling has been supporting shuktara since 2012.

Arriving in Kolkata with her mum Rachel on the 21st of June she has been working every day at Lula Bari with our girls and young women.

Everyone at Lula Bari had so much fun and thoroughly enjoyed the varied interesting and imaginative activities including art, music and playing catch.

Today we say goodbye to Emily and her mum Rachel Howling as they continue on their travels. We can't thank her enough for coming to Kolkata and making every day an exciting one at Lula Bari!

Emily, our Rose Queen, visits shuktara

When Emily Howling became Mellor Rose Queen in the UK in 2012 she chose shuktara as her charity and raised funds to help support our homes.
Emily wanted to visit shuktara and here's what she says on her GoFundMe page:

"Shuktara means a lot to me as it was my Rose Queen charity back in 2012, when my team and I raised over £13000 for them. Having the chance to visit would be incredible!"

This week she finally arrived in Kolkata with her mum Rachel. Every day both of them have been working with the girls at Lula Bari.
We want to send a huge thank you to everyone who supported Emily when she was Rose Queen and also on her GoFundMe page that helped her come visit us.
