Sanjib’s birthday at shuktara

September 23rd was Sanjib Shaw's birthday and he decided to share his day with the young people at shuktara.

He brought chicken, Indian sweets, chocolate and cakes as well as one sack of rice!

Pappu Mishra (chairman of shuktara) is really happy when local people develop an interest in shuktara.
Sanjib heard about us when he started visiting our locality.

So we say thank you and Janamdin Mubarek (Happy Birthday) to Sanjib!

shuktara home for kids with disabilities - 2016 Raksha Bandhan - Lali, Guria, and David

Rakhi at shuktara

Raksha Bandhan is a festival celebrated throughout India on a full moon day when traditionally a sister ties a Rakhi on her brother's wrist. According to Wikipedia:

The festival celebrates the love and duty between brothers and sisters. It is also popularly used to celebrate any brother-sister relationship between men and women who may or may not be biologically related.

Pappu Mishra, Somnath Sardar and David took Sunil to Lula Bari in the afternoon where the girls had all made threads for the boys in shuktara.

Sunil was the centre of attention and each girl put a Rakhi on his wrist as well as on Pappu, Somnath and David.

Because this is shuktara where equality rules Somnath and Pappu also tied threads for each of the girls!

Independence Day

Independence Day, celebrated on August 15th, is always a cause for celebration at shuktara. The Indian flag is raised on the roof of both the boys and the girls homes.

Saluting the flag is not only a serious occasion for the girls at Lula Bari - it's also a time for some fun. Here are some photos of Muniya and Tamina enjoying their Independence Day celebration.

shuktara home for disabled girls - 2016 July - Guria before tuitions start with Priyanka

Waiting for tuitions with Priyanka

Priyanka has been coming regularly to give tuitions to the girls at Lula Bari for many years now. She is deaf and understands what it is like to be a young woman with disability in India.

Puja is getting a bit of tender loving care before class - she is lying on Priyanka's lap.

Guria is waiting for the class to begin – smiling as usual. In general the young people at shuktara love to have classes and learn new things – Guria is no exception.

Embroidery class brings smiles

The stitching and embroidery class continues at Lula Bari, supervised by the girls home tutor, Nandita.

We love watching Guria in her standing frame, working independently. Her concentration is amazing - she is so determined, proud of her work and very happy to be participating in this group activity.

shuktara home for disabled girls - Guri draws independently

Guria draws independently!

Guria is now able to stand in her frame supporting herself so that she can do many things independently, including draw with crayons. Our friend Judith Harris from London sent a set of Easy Grip Playon Crayons to make drawing easier for Guria as she has difficulty with fine motor skills.

shuktara home for disabled girls - 2016 July - Prity standing

Prity stands!

On 9th June we took Prity to Mobility India for the measurement of AFO* and knee gaiters. After she was measured they asked us to come back on 29th June for the trial of these devices which will strengthen her legs so that she can stand unassisted.

She has never been able to stand so to move around either she crawls or a staff member has to carry her. When she was younger (and smaller) this was easy but as she grows it gets harder to lift her.

Prity really liked both assistive devices because now she is able to stand by holding the table or window. We hope that in the future Prity will able to walk with assistance.

*Ankle-foot orthosis: A brace, usually made of plastic, that is worn on the lower leg and foot to support the ankle, hold the foot and ankle in the correct position and correct foot drop. Abbreviated AFO. Also known as foot drop brace.

Guria and Prity go to Mobility India

On 9th June Pappu, the Chairman of shuktara, took Guria along with Prity to Mobility India to pick up Guria's standing frame. With the help of the standing frame Guria can now stand without anyone holding her, and also she will be able to feed herself and do her studies. She looks really happy and comfortable with her standing frame.

Pappu decided to do the same thing for Prity as we have done for Guria and so she was also measured for knee gaiters and removable splints which are fitted to her feet. Prity will continue with her physiotherapy and we will also get a standing frame for her so that she will have more mobility.
